In May 2015 Einstein Probe was selected as a 'candidate mission of priority’ in the space science programme of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It would go ahead without further selection once the funding is allocated from the government, aiming for launch around 2020. The mission was first proposed in 2012 by NAOC and IHEP, and was selected by the CAS in 2013 as one of the candidate missions for advanced studies, and is funded for mission definition, preliminary design and prototype building during 2014-2015.
